MP calls for mental health submissions

YARRA Valley residents with an interest in mental health issues are being invited to comment on a plan for a new approach to mental health in Victoria.
Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said that it was important for residents in the Yarra Valley to make submissions.
“This consultation paper focuses on the importance of ensuring there are adequate services for young people and sufficient attention is paid to prevention and early intervention,” Ms Lobato said.
“This paper is an important step in the plan to reform the mental health system and to endure the mental health of Victorians through prevention, early intervention and recovery.”
She said it was important to give attention to young people and children, given that the majority of all serious mental health and substance abuse disorders commence before the age of 25. “Early intervention and treatment is vital to improve the chances of recovery,” Ms Lobato said.
“Untreated illnesses can have a major impact on long-term health, education, job prospects and participation in community life.”
“Currently most of those seeking help for mental health illnesses are already in the severe or chronic stage and this needs to change.”
Ms Lobato said that the consultation paper proposes a more inclusive and locally connected response to mental health problems, comprising specialist services in partnership with primary care and social support agencies.
Copies of the paper can be emailed or posted to those interested in making a comment.

Comments and submissions can be made until 31 July.
