Police probe deadly three-car collision

POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding a three-car collision in Mount Evelyn on Saturday morning.
The collision occurred about 8.35am on York Road.
Investigators believe a blue Holden VN Commodore sedan, travelling north east on York Road was rounding a long bend when it crossed double lines and clipped a silver Mazda 626 sedan travelling in the opposite direction.
Both vehicles then spun and the Commodore collided head on with a red Toyota Land cruiser, also travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Commodore, a 29-year-old man from Millgrove, was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver of the Mazda, a 35-year-old woman from Wandin East, received minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Maroondah Hospital.
The driver of the Toyota, a 38-year-old man from Lilydale, received serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by ambulance. The Toyota caught fire at the scene but the fire was extinguished by a bystander.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
