Mental health help

FEELINGS of loneliness and isolation can be heightened at Christmas, making it a stressful time for many people.
In the lead-up to the holiday season the Eastern Ranges GP Association (ERGPA) is reminding Yarra Ranges residents that their local general practices is a place where they can seek mental health help, advice and support.
ERGPA chairwoman Dr Barbara Inness said Christmas can be especially difficult for people, who have recently experienced a loss or do not have friends and family to celebrate with.
“It is important to be aware of this and to look after yourself as well as your friends and families and to seek help for depression,” she said.
“GPs are well trained to diagnose and treat patients suffering from depression. GPs can work with patients to create mental health plans which may include referral to psychologists and, where appropriate, group sessions,” she added.
Doctors can also recommend and refer patients.
The After Hours Clinic at Healesville will be open on all the public holidays from noon to 10am. However, the clinic at Yarra Junction will be closed on those days. Phone 1300 766 858.
For urgent assistance call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (a 24-hour counselling, information and referrals service) or the beyondblue info line on 1300 22 4636.
