YARRA Glen students will receive extra numeracy programs, thanks to community generosity, after a donation from the local pub earlier this month.
On 9 June, Yarra Glen Grand Hotel owner Craig Barnett visited Yarra Glen Primary School to present a cheque for $1000 to principal Sue Di Giacomo.
Mr Barnett said the money resulted from the hotel’s Friday night raffles, with profits saved until $1000 can be given to a community group.
The school is the second recipient of the hotel’s donations, after the Yarra Glen CFA received a $1000 cheque earlier this year.
Ms Di Giacomo said half of the donation would go towards physical education at the school and a program that may be run later in the year, with the rest going towards a numeracy recovery program.
“We’re starting a numeracy recovery program for students that, perhaps, need a bit of extra help in Year 3 and Year 5,” she said.
“We hope to have someone here as an extra person who will be able to facilitate that.”
Ms Di Giacomo said the school had applied for further funding for the numeracy program, and that the school was grateful to receive the support.
“We’re over the moon with the donation – we think it’s very considerate that they’ve thought of us,” she said.
She said that, with much of the school’s fund-raising directed towards cooling the school, the numeracy program wouldn’t have gone ahead without the Grand’s donation.
The Yarra Glen Grand Hotel’s raffles are held between 6pm and 7pm on Friday nights.
